Practical tips before choosing between EV and petrol

Start with your daily route, not the car ad. Write down your normal commute, school runs, office parking situation, weekend errands, and monthly highway trips. Boring? Yes. Useful? Extremely.

Then check the charging reality. If you can charge at home, an EV becomes much easier to live with. If you can charge at work too, even better. If you must depend on public chargers, visit the ones you’d use. Not once on a sunny afternoon, but at a normal busy time. See if they work, if they’re occupied, if the app behaves, and if the location feels safe at night. Tiny details, big difference.

For petrol cars, be honest about mileage. Don’t use the highway figure your friend claims after driving downhill with divine wind assistance. City mileage matters for most people. Traffic, air conditioning, tyre pressure, load, driving habits, all of it chips away.

Also compare comfort and convenience, not only money. Some people love the quietness of EVs. Some people hate planning charging stops. Some want a small city runabout. Some need one car for long rural trips where chargers are rare. There is no medal for choosing the “technically superior” car that annoys you every week.

Back to Ravi and the family court
