Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is a simple body measurement that compares the circumference of your waist to the circumference of your hips. Unlike BMI, which only looks at overall weight relative to height, WHR tells you where on your body fat tends to accumulate - a factor that research links closely to cardiovascular and metabolic health risk.

The Formula

WHR is calculated by dividing your waist circumference by your hip circumference, both measured in the same unit:

WHR=WaistcircumferenceHipcircumferenceWHR = \frac{Waist_{circumference}}{Hip_{circumference}}

Both measurements can be taken in centimeters or inches - the ratio itself is unit-independent as long as both values use the same unit.

How to Measure Correctly

  1. Waist: Measure at the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above the belly button, after breathing out normally. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin.
  2. Hip: Measure around the widest part of your hips and buttocks, standing with your feet together.
  3. Take both measurements in the same unit (centimeters or inches) and, ideally, first thing in the morning for consistency.

Understanding Your Result

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies cardiovascular risk based on WHR differently for men and women, since fat distribution patterns naturally differ by sex:

For men:

  • Below 0.90 - Low risk
  • 0.90 to 0.99 - Moderate risk
  • 1.00 and above - High risk

For women:

  • Below 0.80 - Low risk
  • 0.80 to 0.84 - Moderate risk
  • 0.85 and above - High risk

A higher ratio indicates more "apple-shaped" fat distribution (fat concentrated around the abdomen), which is associated with a higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes compared to a "pear-shaped" distribution (fat concentrated around the hips and thighs).

Worked Example

Suppose a man measures a waist of 92 cm and a hip of 102 cm:

WHR=92102=0.90WHR = \frac{92}{102} = 0.90

A WHR of 0.90 falls right at the edge of the moderate-risk band for men, so this calculator would flag it as Moderate risk and suggest keeping an eye on abdominal fat through diet and activity.

Why Use This Calculator

  • Quick health screening: Get an instant WHO-based risk category alongside your exact ratio.
  • Complements BMI: BMI alone can't distinguish between muscle and fat, or where fat is stored - WHR fills that gap.
  • No special equipment needed: All you need is a flexible tape measure.
