Pet Age Calculator

What this calculator does

Converts your dog's or cat's age into the equivalent human age, using the widely-used veterinary rule-of-thumb charts (the same style of chart used by vets and pet-care guides), and tells you:

  • their age in human years
  • their current life stage (baby, young adult, adult, senior)
  • a few care tips suited to that life stage
  • a full pet-age-to-human-age lookup chart for their species/size

Formula Used

Both cats and all dog sizes share the first two years:

humanAge=petAge×15(for petAge1)humanAge = petAge \times 15 \quad \text{(for } petAge \le 1\text{)} humanAge=15+(petAge1)×9(for 1<petAge2)humanAge = 15 + (petAge - 1) \times 9 \quad \text{(for } 1 < petAge \le 2\text{)}

After year 2, each additional pet year adds a fixed number of human years depending on species and, for dogs, size:

humanAge=24+(petAge2)×rate(for petAge>2)humanAge = 24 + (petAge - 2) \times rate \quad \text{(for } petAge > 2\text{)}

Where rate is:

  • Cats: 4 human years per year
  • Small dogs (up to 20 lbs): 4 human years per year
  • Medium dogs (21-50 lbs): 4.5 human years per year
  • Large dogs (51-90 lbs): 5 human years per year
  • Giant dogs (over 90 lbs): 8 human years per year

Larger dog breeds age faster in their later years, which is why giant breeds have a much higher rate than small breeds.

Life stages

Based on the computed human-equivalent age:

  • Under 15: Baby (puppy/kitten)
  • 15 to 29: Young Adult
  • 30 to 59: Adult
  • 60 and over: Senior

Example

A 7-year-old large dog (51-90 lbs):

humanAge=24+(72)×5=24+25=49humanAge = 24 + (7 - 2) \times 5 = 24 + 25 = 49

That puts the dog at 49 human years old, in the "Adult" life stage.

Notes

  • This is a general estimate based on commonly-published pet-age charts, not veterinary or medical advice.
  • Individual pets age differently based on breed, health, and lifestyle - use this as a fun, practical guide rather than an exact figure.
