Calories Burned Calculator - Estimate Calories Burned by Activity

What Does This Calculator Do?

The Calories Burned Calculator estimates how many calories you burn during a specific physical activity, based on your body weight, the activity you choose, and how long you do it for. Unlike a BMR calculator (which estimates the calories your body burns at rest), this tool focuses on the extra calories burned during exercise or activity.

The MET Formula

This calculator uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values, a standard measure used in exercise science to describe the energy cost of physical activities. One MET is roughly the amount of energy you burn sitting quietly.

Calories=MET×3.5×weightkg×durationminutes200Calories = MET \times 3.5 \times weight_{kg} \times \frac{duration_{minutes}}{200}

Each activity has its own MET value - faster or more intense activities have higher MET values, and therefore burn more calories per minute.

Activity Approximate MET
Yoga 2.5
Walking (5 km/h) 3.5
Weight Training 3.5
Dancing 4.8
Elliptical / Weight Training (vigorous) 5.0
Hiking 6.0
Basketball 6.5
Cycling (moderate) 7.5
Football / Soccer 7.0
Swimming (moderate) 8.3
Running (10 km/h) 9.8
Jump Rope 11.8

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter Your Weight: Input your current body weight in kilograms.
  2. Enter Duration: Input how many minutes you spent (or plan to spend) doing the activity.
  3. Select Activity: Choose the activity from the dropdown list.
  4. Calculate: Click the calculate button to see your results.

Understanding Your Results

The calculator shows:

  • Calories Burned: The estimated total calories burned for the activity and duration you entered.
  • Calories per Hour: The estimated calorie burn rate for that activity at your weight, useful for comparing activities on an equal footing.
  • Compare Other Activities: A table showing how many calories you would burn doing other activities for the same duration, at the same weight - handy for picking a more efficient workout.

Example Calculation

  • Weight: 70 kg
  • Activity: Running (10 km/h), MET = 9.8
  • Duration: 30 minutes
Calories=9.8×3.5×70×30200=360 kcalCalories = 9.8 \times 3.5 \times 70 \times \frac{30}{200} = 360 \text{ kcal}

A 70 kg person running at 10 km/h for 30 minutes burns approximately 360 kcal.

Why Calorie Burn Estimates Matter

  • Weight Management: Understanding how many calories different activities burn helps you plan a calorie deficit or surplus more accurately.
  • Workout Planning: Compare activities to choose ones that fit your time and calorie-burning goals.
  • Motivation: Seeing tangible numbers for your effort can help keep you consistent.

Limitations

  • MET-based estimates are averages derived from population studies and don't account for individual differences in fitness level, muscle mass, or exercise intensity within an activity.
  • Actual calorie burn can vary by as much as 10-20% between individuals doing the "same" activity.
  • This calculator does not account for age, sex, or heart rate, all of which can further refine calorie-burn estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a MET value? A: MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent of Task. It's a standardized way to express how much energy an activity costs relative to resting.

Q: Is this more accurate than a fitness tracker? A: Fitness trackers that use heart rate data are usually more personalized, but MET-based estimates are a solid, well-researched baseline when you don't have a tracker.

Q: Why does the same activity burn more calories for a heavier person? A: Calorie burn scales with body weight - moving more mass takes more energy, so heavier individuals burn more calories doing the same activity for the same duration.

Q: Can I use this to plan weight loss? A: Yes, use it alongside a BMR Calculator to understand your total daily calorie needs, then factor in the calories burned from your activities.
