Binge-Watch Time Calculator

Ever wondered exactly how long it will take to get through a new show? The Binge-Watch Time Calculator turns a show's episode count and episode length into a real total watch time, a realistic finish date, and a day-by-day viewing schedule based on how much time you actually have.

What It Calculates

Given the number of episodes, the average length of each episode, how many hours you can watch on a "viewing day," and which days of the week you're free to watch, this tool works out:

  • Total watch time - the full runtime of the show, in hours and minutes
  • Episodes per viewing day - how many episodes you'll get through each time you sit down
  • Viewing days needed - the number of actual sessions required to finish
  • Calendar days to finish - how many real-world days pass until you're done, including days you're not watching
  • Estimated completion date - the exact date you'll watch the finale, starting from a date you choose
  • A day-by-day schedule - a table showing what you'll watch on each viewing day and your running progress

The Formula

The core of the calculation is simple arithmetic, but it accounts for the fact that you don't watch every calendar day.

totalMinutes=episodes×episodeLengthtotalMinutes = episodes \times episodeLength episodesPerViewingDay=max(1,hoursPerDay×60episodeLength)episodesPerViewingDay = \max\left(1, \left\lfloor \frac{hoursPerDay \times 60}{episodeLength} \right\rfloor \right)

The calculator then walks forward day by day from your chosen start date. On each day that matches your selected schedule (every day, weekdays only, or weekends only), it "watches" episodesPerViewingDay episodes until the whole show is finished. This naturally produces both the number of viewing days used and the number of calendar days elapsed - two very different numbers if you've picked "weekends only."

How to Use It

  1. Enter the total number of episodes in the show (or season) you're planning to watch.
  2. Enter the average episode length in minutes.
  3. Enter how many hours per day you realistically plan to watch.
  4. Choose your viewing schedule - every day, weekdays only, or weekends only.
  5. Pick your start date.
  6. Submit to see your total watch time, finish date, and full session-by-session schedule.

Worked Example

Say you're starting a 24-episode show, each episode is 42 minutes long, and you plan to watch 2 hours a night, every day, starting today.

  • Total watch time: 24 x 42 = 1008 minutes = 16h 48m
  • Episodes per viewing day: floor(120 / 42) = 2 episodes
  • Viewing days needed: ceil(24 / 2) = 12 days
  • Since you're watching every day, calendar days to finish is also 12 days, and your completion date is 11 days after your start date.

Switch the schedule to "weekends only" and the total watch time stays the same, but the completion date stretches out to several weekends later - exactly the kind of realistic planning this calculator is built for.
